Stu Visser Trails, 52 152nd Ave, Holland MI

Boardwalks and trails wind through these 37 acres of marsh and wetlands. The trails themselves will get you only about a mile and a half hike but it is a beautiful place. There are two trail heads on Lakewood Boulevard and one on Ottawa Beach Road.
We started from Lakewood Boulevard and walked through to Ottawa Beach Road.
The place is gorgeous and peaceful.
There's no loop around so when we got to Ottawa Beach Road we had to turn around and walk back the way we came.
Back near Lakewood Boulevard was a turn off to the right and then a fork in the trail. The trail to the right took us to a dead end and a lovely overlook. The path to the left was the other entrance on Lake Boulevard, enhanced by a Bud Light beer can 😕
It's an easy walk with no elevations but there are a few pieces of the boardwalk sticking up here and there for which to be on the alert.
It's a great place to enjoy the beauty and solitude of nature. We ran into only one other person today (but it was lightly raining 😊).

Saul Lake Bog Nature Preserve, 10471 6 Mile Rd NE, Rockford

  This is a hidden gem in West Michigan that we recently visited. The 123 acre site contains meandering trails that roam through prairie, woods, and bogs. It is unique and beautiful. A General Land Office Survey in 1800 showed this property to be oak-hickory forests with mixed conifer swamp. In the 1860s, John and Mikel Saul emigrated from Ireland and lived here. From then until the 1980s, all land that was not wetlands was cleared and farmed. But in the 1970s some interest rose in protecting the unique wetlands. In 1989 the Nature Area Conservancy of West Michigan bought 52 acres from Valerino & Maria Castro. And in 1991 the Land Conservancy acquired the remaining land. Current management is focused on protecting the bog, reforesting cleared areas, and establishing a tallgrass prairie. Clear Springs Nature Preserve, 3585 W. Fruitvale Road, Montague

This gorgeous 100 or so acreage preserve has about 3 miles of trails and was one of the earliest trading posts in the area (1848, according to Montague Township).  In the 1950s, the property was owned by North Star Fish Hatchery, the Bob Wesley family, and remnants of that can still be seen. In the 1990s, the land was slated to become a 90-home development but Montague Township raised the money to purchase it instead and preserved this beautiful place. Walk the six different trails and find tree stands, turtles, and informative signs. A short distance on the Rim Trail will bring you to this impressive stand of trees. Elevation changes are minimal so the trails are not difficult. Enjoy this scenic and unique preserve!

Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve, 2529 Lake Avenue, North Muskegon ~ 2024

We first visited this beautiful preserve in February of 2024. We returned in May. It's a great birding site and we loved watching the swans work on their nest. We visited again on the 4th of July and brought some friends. It's a peaceful oasis in an urban area and is a wonderful place to take in nature. We'll be back 💗 July 4, 2025: It was 82 degrees but a nice breeze made for a beautiful walk. Cheers to walking Michigan parks!
